Training Blue Angels for Top Secret Missions

Did you know that Backing the Blue Line (BTBL) has a Family Support Committee? Of course you did! It’s the very reason BTBL was conceived. My name is Cassandra. My LEO and I have been together for five years and I’ve been a BTBL member for three years.

Last year, I had the opportunity to join the BTBL Family Support Committee as the Nicollet County Regional Blue Angel. It has been a privilege to join all the Blue Angels of Minnesota and to give back to our officers, who so graciously serve our communities each and every day. Family Support takes great pride in our volunteer base and strives to have at least one committee member in each Minnesota County. However, we always accept more.

Each volunteer is held to high standards- which is why training our committee members is something that we take very seriously. Every year, the co-chairs (Jeni and Melissa) host annual in-person trainings all over the state. This gives committee members an opportunity to connect with their fellow Law Enforcement wives and significant others. We also believe that volunteers who show repetitive involvement in the group are more dedicated and reliable- when we need them most. Family Support strives to aid any and all Minnesota officers who need emotional, physical and mental support. Our volunteers are expected to exhibit respect, privacy and compassion in all that we do on behalf of BTBL. During meetings, we set annual committee goals, agree to expectations, discuss levels of support, review the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), learn about additional committee opportunities and collaborate on communications.

Each member is asked to be a card writer for at least one month out of the year. Although, we are blessed to have many members who volunteer multiple months. Since cards are sent out for all levels of support, committee members are trained to be thoughtful in each step of the process. For example, we consider how we address each envelope, where it’s being delivered too and how the officers or the family will feel when they receive it. Our messages are written purely from the heart and are custom to each situation.

It’s no secret that law enforcement officers are good at giving help, but generally lack when they should and could be asking for it. Our committee members are the silent voice from within each county. If and when any of us hear about an officer or a family that needs help, we alert the co-chairs to ensure that officer and their family receive the support that they deserve. At no time, should any officer feel alone or abandoned.

Our annual meetings provide a refresher to ensure all Blue Angels know when to submit support requests, where to submit requests and they are always provided with materials to pass along to their local law enforcement agencies. We understand that many officers and their families like to keep their personal information out of the public eye. Spreading the knowledge of BTBL and our resources, helps to ensure no officer is left behind.

If you know an officer who is going through a hard time or whose family could use a little extra support, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Family Support Committee.
